Creative Challenge Winners: Patterns

It’s evident from all the amazing entries that patterns do surround the world around us. From the obvious and obsure to using macro and wide angle, you really did a brilliant job to capture some amazing images in this week’s Creative Challenge: Patterns. We were very impressed with the variety of subjects submitted this week. See the top three winners below! For those who weren’t selected, stay tuned because we have set aside a few for future features across the site!
#1. Member antaver59’s use of soft lighting and a tight composition highlighted the subtle hues beautifully of this patterned prickly plant. Congrats to member antaver59 —we’ll feature you’re photo on the homepage tomorrow!
#2. Member volvob12 focused on the textured patterns in this architectural detail of a Singapore rooftop. The vibrant contrast between color and texture in the frame makes for an intriguing study.
#3. The tonal range in this organic nature study from member beautifully highlights the reticulated patterns formed from dried mud.

CSS, Image Sprites, Background Images and Website Optimization

A review of using the CSS sprites method and optimizing the use of background images in websites to reduce requests and improve page load time.

A little recap

The idea of placing multiple states of buttons and other elements that are used in background images took its roots, I believe, from Pixy's Fast Rollovers. The CSS Zen Master extended this to another purpose in CSS Sprites: Image Slicing’s Kiss of Death. Didier Hilhorst came up with a nice application of this method, and I worked it backwards in Responsible CSS - Recycle your background images.
The idea behind the 'sprites' method can obviously be extended to any html element, and there are tangible benefits for doing this, just as long as the designer does his or her usual homework.

Benfits of using the 'sprites' method

What are the possible the benefits of using this method? Essentially it lies in faster download times for your web content.
Readers of Andy Kings book, Speed Up Your Site: Web Site Optimization will notice that this method reduces http requests and makes more efficient use of the data packets used to transfer files to the users computer, and that that is a good thing.

Packet size and http requests

From Web Page Design and Download Time, by Jing Zhi of Keynote Systems (seen here - pdf), cited in Andy's book:
The basic performance principle is therefore to make fewer requests and transmit fewer packets. From this principle, we can derive two basic design rules for wellperforming Web pages. First, reduce the overall size of the page, thereby reducing the number of bytes (and packets) to be transferred over the Internet. Second, limit the number of embedded objects on the page, such as images, each of which must be requested and transferred separately from server to browser.
They also found that it was the number of packets and not necessarily the overall size of the page that was important. If a packet could hold 1460 bytes (the figure given in the article) and your object was 1600 bytes, it would require two packets. They found that this object would transfer at the same speed as another object that was greater in size but still fit in two packets.

Potential payoff

The potential payoff for using this method versus individual images, then, is a faster download time due to reduced number of packets and fewer http requests.
Reducing http requests is easy. One file instead of two or three etc. is simple. But packet requests? That depends...

An example

The number of packets sent will depend on the size of the file and the users internet connection.
As an example, lets look at the fiftyfoureleven.com logo at the top of the page. When this design was first being coded, that link consisted of two 3.34kb images, one for the link state and one for the hover state. Now, by using one image that contains both states and simply bumping it back and forth depending on the hover state, that has been reduced to one 5.35 kb image. Right there is a savings of 1.33 kb. Good news.
Now, for arguments sake lets say that a packet can hold 1460 bytes (packet size for connections greater than 128kb/s = 1500 bytes -40bytes for tcp/ip headers). The two image method used 6 packets, 3 for each image (3.34/1.46, rounded up). The single image method uses 4 packets (5.34/1.46, rounded up).
Things are looking good.

How to optimize

In his alistapart article, Dave refers to the image that holds all of the sprites as his 'master image'. The key to benefitting from this method is to ensure that the file size of your master image isn't a bloated equivalent versus the sum of its pieces.

Conclusion

Great benefits can be realized when combining a master image from slices that fall well below the size of one packet, as that unused packet space goes wasted.
After doing a little more research, it seems that packet size can vary depending on the connection rate. That being said, it may be rather difficult to come up with a firm rule here. To play it smart and safe, try and:
  • build master images that are smaller then the sum of their collective slices (by combining images of similar colors, for example) or
  • rather than use a different distinct image for a certain element, reuse one that you already plan on using elsewhere.
This isn't exactly groundbreaking advice, however having seen the results acheived with the logo on this page, it can be seen that using the sprite method versus individual images at minimum does reduce http requests and even further it can reduce file size which in turn can reduce the number of packets sent.

When Bad News Follows You: SEO Redux?

The NY Times gets some SEO voodoo applied to their CMS and now old news stories are "coming back to haunt" those that were reported upon.

I came across  from Nicholas Carr's post Should the Net forget?
This is an interesting consequence that seems to be getting pushed on SEO, rather then perhaps looking at it from the aspect of accountable reporting, no?
Nicholas states that:
With search engine optimization - or SEO, as it's commonly known - news organizations and other companies are actively manipulating the Web's memory. They're programming the Web to "remember" stuff that might otherwise have become obscure by becoming harder to find.
The result is that:
People are coming forward at the rate of roughly one a day to complain that they are being embarrassed, are worried about losing or not getting jobs, or may be losing customers because of the sudden prominence of old news articles that contain errors or were never followed up.

In Summary

So, in the past as the print info (newspaper issues) simply disappeared or, more recently, as they hid the content behind paywalls and poor SEO, newspapers didn't have to worry about the consequences of articles that contain errors or were never followed up, but now people may suffer from these mistakes and lack of integrity.
What do you think the answer should be? Nicholas Carr asks Should the Net forget? I'm not so sure, and I don't think that the answer is that simple.
There's a learning curve to moving print onto the web, and this case encompasses one facet of what needs to be conisdered, but it would be great if some form of integrity from those doing the reporting kept these kinds of things from happening.

14 of the Most Useful Web Design Blogs

There is definitely not a shortage of web design blogs floating around the web, and it’s easy to understand why. Web designers can utilize skills that they already have to get a good looking blog up and running with relative ease. Out of these blogs there are a handful that really stand out in terms of useful content.
Here are some of the most useful web design blogs out there. I’ve excluded big blogs like Smashing Magazine and A List Apart, since most web designers, more than likely, already follow them.

How an Internet Marketer convinces their child to go to school/day care/park

Lately I've taken to subscribing to many newsletters and the "free" programs being offered by internet marketers - think Frank Kern, Yanik Silver et al. - and people like Aaron Wall and Shoemoney and that Brian fellow over at Copyblogger.
If you, like me, receive some of these emails, you may have noticed how their sales methods have taken the typical long web page sales pitch and turned it on its side. They've spliced it into emails and videos and feed that info to us in a much more interactive and entertaining manner then the long winded sales pages of old.
So this morning while trying to convince my 21 month old son to go to the park (that's right, to convince him to go to the park) I found that the usual things were not working. That is when it hit me.

Parental persuasion ala Frank Kern

Please note that I have not met nor do I know Frank Kern, and I am only singling him out because his name stuck with me. I suppose this parody below could be recognizable to Jeff Walker's children as well. One last note, I have found the free info they give away as they get you to the offer/pitch/monthly service to be quite valuable.
  • Dad: Hey son, want to go to the park with your favorite car and play on the swings?
  • Son: No!
  • Dad: Oh, did I mention that I found some extra strawberries, your favorite fruit? I figured you would want them and washed some for you. Want to go to the park with your favorite car and play on the swings and have some strawberries?
  • Son: My car...? No!
  • Dad: We can take the little soccer ball and some balloons. We know you like balloons so we bought some extras last night. Want to go to the park with your favorite car and play on the swings, with the ball and the balloons and have some strawberries? You don't have to do anything, just have fun!
  • Son: Balloons...? Where's my car? No!
  • Dad: Hey listen. Its 8:00, the street cleaner will pass soon. If we go now we can also see the street cleaner! You love the street cleaner and if we don't go now who knows when he will pass again.. Maybe never! Want to go downstairs and see the street cleaner, then go to the park with your favorite car and play on the swings, with the ball and the balloons and have some strawberries?
  • Son: Street cleaner...? Balloons...? Where's my car? Hmm... (asks for shoes, walks over to the car...) No!
  • Dad: Listen. If we go down now, we can stop at the bakery. I'll order an espresso (you love the noise from the espresso machine!) and get you some toast and jam (I'll pay; you get this fre.e!) and we can sit at a table outside and watch the street cleaner. Then we can go to the park with your favorite car and play on the swings, with the ball and the balloons and have some strawberries? And one last BONUS: we can stop at the fountain and throw in some rocks!!
Look, if you don't have fun doing this, later I will take you to the pool.
    YOU CAN"T LOSE!!
  • Son: (getting up on the car...) Yes! Lets do it! (makes some vroom vroom noises with the car).
Father and son head down the elevator out to the bakery. Son demands the water fountain in the park so we head straight there, where strawberries are eaten and some rocks thrown in. Then he says "casa" (hey, we live in Spain) and demands to go home. We stop to watch the street cleaner pass by and head home, not having visited the swings, played with the balloon or balls or had breakfast at the bakery.
(Okay, so in the end I also pick on we folks who buy these things - be they live the internet lifestyle products or self-help books - and don't implement them to the fullest :)

JavaScript WYSIWYG Editor – TinyEditor

JavaScript WYSIWYG Editor
TinyEditor is a simple JavaScript WYSIWYG editor that is both lightweight (8KB) and standalone. It can easily be customized to integrate with any website through CSS and the multitude of parameters. It handles most of the basic formatting needs and has some functionality built in to help keep the rendered markup as clean as possible. The icons are courtesy of  and have been combined into a sprite so there are only a few HTTP requests for the editor. I plan on adding some updates in the future to support font color, a full-screen mode, and a paste from Word option.
To initialize the script use the following:
01new TINY.editor.edit('editor',{
02    id:'input', // (required) ID of the textarea
03    width:584, // (optional) width of the editor
04    height:175, // (optional) heightof the editor
05    cssclass:'te', // (optional) CSS class of the editor
06    controlclass:'tecontrol', // (optional) CSS class of the buttons
07    rowclass:'teheader', // (optional) CSS class of the button rows
08    dividerclass:'tedivider', // (optional) CSS class of the button diviers

10    footer:true, // (optional) show the footer
11    fonts:['Verdana','Arial','Georgia','Trebuchet MS'],  // (optional) array of fonts to display
12    xhtml:true, // (optional) generate XHTML vs HTML
13    cssfile:'style.css', // (optional) attach an external CSS file to the editor
14    content:'starting content', // (optional) set the starting content else it will default to the textarea content
15    css:'body{background-color:#ccc}', // (optional) attach CSS to the editor
16    bodyid:'editor', // (optional) attach an ID to the editor body
17    footerclass:'tefooter', // (optional) CSS class of the footer

Learn and Master the Guitar

No matter how long you’ve played your six string for, at some point, every guitar player has a choice to make. Either you can decide to play just for fun, or, you can decide to get really serious and decide to master and learn guitar. If this is you, congratulations, you are about to embark on a fantastic, challenging and yet rewarding musical journey.
There are many different ways to master and learn guitar. I would like to share with you three simple steps that will allow you to focus your quest in pursuing the guitar more seriously.
1. Find a guitar instructor
2. Increase your practice schedule
3. Practice in modules
1. Find a guitar instructor: It is of utmost importance that if you’re going to get serious in learning how to master and learn guitar; that you find an instructor that has played the guitar for more than 10 years. If your teacher has a musical education behind them, even better. Having someone to tutor you on guitar will allow you to stay focused and learn proper technique more quickly than if you were to try learning on your own. The guitar instructor will also be able to challenge your playing abilities and give you homework that will allow you to improve your playing skills
2. Increase your practice schedule: If you are a casual player who practices occasionally, this will need to stop. I generally recommend to a beginner guitar player a bare minimum of two times a week for a half hour. In the case of a serious musician wanting to master and learn guitar, I recommend a minimum of 3 to 5 times a week for an hour. Increasing your practice schedule will allow you more time to practice all of the various techniques such as scales, chords, and arpeggios that you will be learning on the guitar.
3. Practice in modules: Now that you’ve decided to increase your practice times; you will want to make sure that you stay focused during these times practice. It can be very easy to get distracted, or play what you have already learned in the past. The secret to staying focused is to practice in module units. Module units are mini 10 minute learning periods of time. For example, during a one hour practice session you’ll warm-up for 10 minutes, practice chords for 10 minutes, scales for another 10, arpeggios for another 10, a new song for 10 more minutes, and end off with some sight reading practice. Remember, if you’re serious about learning how to master and learn guitar your modular practice times are not the time to play whatever you want to. Save playtime on your instrument as a reward for your hours worth of practice.

What's the Best Search Box Size?

Search is an important component of any large website, especially an online retailer with thousands of products.
However, when visiting different sites I've seen little consensus on how many characters should be viewable in a search box, even though being able to read what you've typed is key to search usability.
I thought it would be interesting to review the search boxes of web retailers to see if there were any best practices that could be learned from them regarding search box size.
Rather than pick sites at random, I took my list of online stores from Internet Retailer's top 500 list and picked out the top 30. After all, for these sites search should be an even more critical component as it would be used so frequently.
To determine the size of each search box I repeated the string "1234567890" and stopped adding numbers when the initial "1" was no longer visible.

Results

The average search box length was 29 characters and the median was 27 characters. Interestingly, this closely matches Jacob Nielsen's recommendation (albeit made back in 2002) that search should be at least 27 characters wide.

50-59 Characters

4 out of the 30 stores (13%) chose to emphasize search with really big search boxes. Not surprisingly, Amazon led the way (as a point of reference, Google's search box fits 49 characters).

40-49 Characters

Another 4 stores (13%) had large search boxes, although the size of the box relative to the rest of the website was greatly influenced by the padding and font size of the search text box.

30-39 Characters

Only 2 stores (7%) chose the 'middle' ground of the 30 character range.

20-29 Characters

A full 40% of stores — 12 out of 30 — had search box lengths in the 20s, with quite a lot of clustering around the average search box size of 29 characters.

10-19 Characters

Over a quarter of stores — 8 (27%) — had very small search boxes. This was surprising given how screen real estate has increased over the years. I don't really see why these search boxes need to be so small.
Here's how the search boxes compare when placed side-to-side. Click on the image to view the full version.

Issues/Objectives:

Martinsburg RV had very little Internet presence prior to working with Lazerpro. RVs in the company’s inventory were listed online in industry portals, but Martinsburg RV was unable to distinguish its offerings from others in this crowded listing system. Because of the limited success of listing inventory through industry portals, Martinsburg RV needed to develop its own unique presence without losing the of increased visibility typically gained with industry portals.
Lazerpro's Role:

Martinsburgrv.com was a perfect candidate for Lazerpro’s Auto-Guide. The Auto-Guide allows Martinsburg RV personnel to quickly and easily update dynamic vehicle inventory through a secure, online interface with no knowledge of HTML programming language. Martinsburg RV can now showcase its entire inventory online, including vehicle descriptions and photos. Website users now know which vehicle interests them prior to calling or submitting their contact information online.
Also, because Martinsburg RV offers their vehicles nationwide, their website had to be highly visible in the major search engines. Lazerpro responded with its 12 month Traffic Generating Program. This program ensures that the Martinsburg RV website is found in the major search engines when users search on words and phrases associated with Martinsburg RV’s business.

Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing is the use of the Internet to advertise and sell goods and services. Internet Marketing includes pay per click advertising, banner ads, e-mail marketing, search engine marketing (including search engine optimization), blog marketing, and article marketing.

Internet Marketing is a component of electronic commerce. Internet Marketing can include information management, public relations, customer service, and sales. Electronic commerce and Internet Marketing have become popular as Internet access is becoming more widely available and used. Well over one third of consumers who have Internet access in their homes report using the Internet to make purchases.

Most people do not realize that promoting and marketing their Web Site is an important and on-going process to ensure the success of their site. Search will remain an important source of traffic for websites, and a crucial element in your marketing plan. Webmax Solutions specialize in helping clients increase their Internet visibility through proven Internet Marketing Services in Delhi (india), online web marketing services and search engine marketing campaigns.

Having a website is not synonymous with internet marketing. The internet is vast and your website may be easily lost among millions of other similar sites. You need the help of a specialist to market your products and services online. Webmax Solutions is your destination if you are looking to efficiently market your business online - we run it for you and make it a success.

Internet marketing, also referred to as online marketing, Internet advertising, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet. When applied to the subset of website-based advertisement placements, Internet marketing is commonly referred to as Web advertising (also Webvertising) and Web marketing. The Internet has brought many unique benefits to marketing, one of which being lower costs for the distribution of information and media to a global audience. The interactive nature of Internet marketing, both in terms of providing instant response and eliciting responses, is a unique quality of the medium. Internet marketing is sometimes considered to have a broader scope because it refers to digital media such as the Internet, e-mail, and wireless media; however, Internet marketing also includes management of digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management (E-CRM) systems.

Internet marketing ties together creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including design, development, advertising, and sales. Internet marketing does not simply entail building or promoting a website, nor does it mean placing a banner ad on another website. Effective Internet marketing requires a comprehensive strategy that synergizes a given company's business model and sales goals with its website function and appearance, focusing on its target market through proper choice of advertising type, media, and design.

Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies. In 2008 The New York Times working with comScore published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found the potential for collecting upward of 2,500 pieces of data on average per user per month.
